The Season That Sells Out First

A Christmas market river cruise turns December in Europe into one long, glowing evening. Every day the ship ties up in a different old town, and every old town has its square full of wooden stalls, carols, mulled wine and the smell of roasting almonds. You stroll back to the ship with a mug of Glühwein in hand, and by morning you are somewhere new.

European Riverside Cruises is entirely about this season. We explain which rivers and markets to choose, how the 2026 and 2027 seasons line up with Advent, which sailings make the best Christmas market river cruises, and how to stay warm and get the most from each town. For a year-round overview of Europe’s rivers, our sister site European Riverboat Cruises covers every route.

Why the markets work so well by river

  • Many of the great markets are riverside towns. Strasbourg, Cologne, Vienna and Budapest all lie on cruise routes.
  • Evening docking. Ships often stay late or overnight so you can see the markets lit up.
  • No winter driving. No icy autobahns, no parking in packed old towns.
  • A warm base. A heated cabin and lounge to return to between outings.
  • Shopping made easy. Bring ornaments and gifts straight back to your cabin.

Christmas Market River Cruises in Europe: The Three Main Routes

The Rhine

Basel, Strasbourg, Speyer, Rüdesheim, Koblenz, Cologne and on to the Netherlands. Old-world markets with a French accent in Alsace.

The Main and the Rhine

Nuremberg, Bamberg, Würzburg and Frankfurt, often combined with the Rhine. The heart of German Christmas tradition.

The Danube

Regensburg, Passau, Linz, Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest. Imperial cities and coffeehouse warmth.

Our guide to Christmas market river cruises in Europe compares these routes town by town.

What You Find at the Markets

Each region has its own specialties. In Nuremberg it is Lebkuchen gingerbread and little grilled sausages; in Dresden, Stollen; in Vienna, hot punch and roasted chestnuts; in Budapest, chimney cake twisted around a wooden spit. You will find hand-carved wooden ornaments, glass baubles, straw stars, candles and nutcrackers everywhere. Hot drinks are often served in a decorated mug with a small deposit: return the mug for your money back, or keep it as a souvenir from each town.

Markets are lively in the evening and on weekends, calmer on weekday mornings. Guided walks on the cruise usually give you the history of the town, then leave free time for the stalls.

Christmas Market River Cruise Questions

When do Christmas market river cruises sail?

From late November through December, timed to the Advent season when the markets are open. Most markets open in the last week of November and close on or just before Christmas Eve; a few, in cities such as Vienna and Budapest, run longer.

Which river is best for a Christmas market river cruise?

The Rhine and the Danube are the classics. The Rhine links Basel, Strasbourg, Koblenz and Cologne; the Danube links Passau, Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest. Itineraries on the Main add Nuremberg, Bamberg and Würzburg, often the most atmospheric of all.

Is it too cold for a river cruise in December?

It is cold — often around freezing — but river ships are heated and the markets are designed for winter, with hot drinks and warm food at every turn. Dress in layers and you will be comfortable.

Do I need to book far ahead?

Yes, if you want a particular date or cabin. Christmas market sailings are among the most popular of the year, and the weekends before Christmas fill first.
